The Southern Lights

Introduction

In October 2020, our Foundation made a grant to The Southern Lights. The Southern Lights is an educational and land stewardship nonprofit organization that actively regenerates ecosystems in which people, inspired by nature, create and maintain healthy and abundant livelihoods. The areas of focus are: permaculture, agroforestry, regenerative farming, non-violent communication, natural building, healthy nutrition and movement, renewable energy solutions.

Utilization of donation

To this direction, our Foundation funded the campaign “Food Forest Tour”. Food forests mimic natural forests but consisting primary of plants that provide food. Mimicking the forest has the benefit of having an autonomous system that doesn't depend on inputs from outside, it creates soil and provides habitat and thus contributes to biodiversity in plants, insects and small animals besides a lot of other services.

This unity project aims to bring food forests to projects and community places all around Greece, raise awareness and spread knowledge about the potential of regenerating ecosystems while producing healthy food. The Southern Lights will share the principles of permaculture as a tool for regeneration, empower people in growing their own food and provide education on regulating microclimate, favoring water cycles and fertilizing the soil.
